Every day, millions of people at work are subjected to little injustices and tiny “unfairnesses” called micro-inequities.
Normally, if someone complains about a little bit of rudeness, we would shrug and say, “So what, grow up.” However, in the workplace, these little injustices and micro-inequities add up until they trigger tension in teams and breakdowns in work relationships, which is why they’re do damaging in the workplace. The ultimate outcome is declining productivity, reduced effectiveness and, yes, the opposite of the success everybody tries so hard to achieve.
The problem with micro-inequities is that they are often unintentional and even unconsciously perpetrated, making the “bad” behavior rather difficult to prove, to correct or even to outlaw. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that there is much that managers can do to help employees overcome the demoralizing impact that micro-inequities have on morale, productivity, commitment and loyalty—and to keep from participating in these behaviors themselves.

James was born in the middle of South Africa wine country, earned three degrees drinking red wine, was chased by a lioness, had to run from elephants, got bored, and moved to the USA seeking adventure.
He is a former senior executive and interim CEO who now works as an executive business coach and consultant, specializing in strategy development and execution. He has spent more than 25 years making organizations and management teams more effective, mainly by creating shifts in strategy-perception and execution-behavior. He has done this for CEOs, leaders and teams in different business environments, including the public sector and non-profits. During his career, he has been directly involved in diversification strategies, the integration of acquisitions, start-ups, the sale of business units and corporate turnarounds from bankruptcy.
Unsurprisingly, he has seen a lot of nonsense at work. That’s why he now shows senior executives how to make the nonsense at work – work for them. When this gets the better of him, he retreats to writing and public speaking until his confidence returns. He has been repeating this cycle for decades without seriously hurting himself, his clients, his audience or, most importantly, his family.
James has authored two books about overcoming and even embracing nonsense at work, Crossing the Nonsense Divide and Make the Nonsense at Work Work for You. He has also written chapters of two other books, namely Madiba Mindset: Your Own Freedom Charter and Torn In The New SA: Living, Loving and Leaving South Africa.
